Sun or Snow? Get some inspiration for your winter break!

Christmas and New Year are a massive feature in our winter calendars. We all get caught up in the rush, the countdown, and all the little rituals and celebrations that surround it. But even with all these sparkly distractions, winter can feel a long old time if you haven’t got a holiday lined up.

In fact, we’d hazard a guess that most of us don’t start our holiday planning until spring, and in some disorganised cases, summer - you know who you are! So, it’s no wonder that come February we’re climbing the walls for a chance to have a break.

There are plenty of destinations - hot or cold - that are worth your full attention at this time of year, plus it’s a great time to snap up travel deals on offer. If you don’t know where to start looking for a quick google of ‘where to go when’ will throw all sorts of handy hints your way. We like Skyscanners interactive map for starters (LINK TO: or you could just check out our recommendations below.

Don’t wait until you’re making your New Year’s resolution list, we know travel more will be on there anyway, get looking and booking now.

Under the sun...

Did someone mention sun?! Before you fade into colour matching every magnolia wall ever painted, jet off to one of these still sunny destinations.

Canary Islands

A feature on most winter sun destination lists and quite rightly so. These islands really do offer all year around sun, plus they are only a hop skip and a short flight away - brilliant if you have a young family. Although known for their beaches, if staring at sand gets too dull these islands offer much more. Hit Lanzarote for its lunar landscape, Gran Canaria offers the desert sand dunes of Maspalomas or its sub-tropical Palmitos Park, and in Tenerife you can hike the trails of Mount Teide.

Thailand isn’t just for backpackers, and Christmas is the perfect time to head there. December sees the rainy season coming to an end and gives way to dependable sun for tourists. This Far Eastern gem won’t disappoint with its photogenic white sand beaches and perfect sunsets.

If a beach break seems a little been-there-done-that but you still want warmth, then look to Marrakech in Morocco. This destination will well and truly blow your winter boredom out the window. Try the local mint infused tea, get the ultimate spa treatment in a hammam, haggle at the Souks, and dance the night away with your newly learnt Berber moves. All of this within an ancient fortified city.

On the colder side...

Already had your fill of warm summer holidays? Then perhaps you fancy the flip side of the coin and will be booking trip to those destinations that embrace winter.

Ok, when we said winter destinations you were probably thinking arctic conditions, but hear us out. We all know Greece for its beautiful islands but it is also home to some of the world’s most amazing ancient artefacts and buildings. Hitting Europe’s cities out of season is a great way to avoid the summer crowds for sightseeing hot spots - you won’t get the summer heat, but neither will you get the huge queues and hiked prices

The Highlands, Scotland

When it comes to Scotland at winter we can often only associate it with its New Year celebrations in its cities. But go a little further north and you may discover a snowy scenery to rival that of its scandinavian neighbours. Book a cottage with a log fire and take hikes in fir tree filled landscapes - try Glencoe, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, or the Cairngorns National Park for starters.

Ah skiing. You couldn’t have a winter holiday list without mentioning our favourite winter pastime. We’re putting Jasná in Slovakia’s firmly on our destination list for family skiing. Here you can expect stunning landscapes, well kept pistes, and a skiing infrastructure to rival its alpine cousins. But as it is yet to be overrun with tourists, it is a seriously cheap resort for a family skiing holiday.
